Oscars Viewership Falls to Under 10 Million for the First Time Ever

Published

on

The 93rd Academy Awards, a.k.a. “the Oscars,” which was broadcasted live on April 25, was not the most memorable one. According to initial data released by Nielsen, only 9.5 million Americans watched the show.

What We Know:

  • An April 27 update revealed the final number to be 10.4 million watchers. This is a significant drop from last year’s show, which brought in an audience of 23.6 million. From 2020-2021, the Oscar crowd went down 58%.
  • Nielsen announced the ratings of the target demographic, ages 18-49, as well. The group rated this year’s Oscars a 1.9, which is “a steep and worrisome dive.” In 2019, the yearly production had a 7.7 rating from the same category.
  • This is not unusual for the 2021 Awards Season. February’s telecast of the Golden Globes suffered a viewership decline of 63%, and March’s Grammy Awards plummeted to 51%. CNBC reveals the Oscars’ small audience may also be due to a lack of moviegoers amid the pandemic. Also, not many people had seen or heard of the nominated movies.
  • Another reason for the shortage includes producers’ efforts to change the mood and feeling of the Oscars. Filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, one of the three producers, intended to make several unique changes to the show. Alongside Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins, he intended to make the event feel like a movie instead of a TV show. He did so by changing the scenery from the usual Dolby Theatre to the Union Station. The producers also switched the order of the awards’ presentations; they announced Best Picture earlier on in the event and moved Best Actor until the end.
  • Also, due to COVID-19 restrictions, not many actors could be invited. Further, it meant the usual Best Song performances that offer “moments of levity and spectacle between speeches” could not occur. Instead, the nominees prerecorded their performances, and they were played before the Oscars began.
  • Because of Sunday’s low ratings, advertisers may face financial losses. The Washington Post writes this is because ABC does not offer rating guarantees to its sponsors. On top of that, studios who expected free publicity for their winners must search for other ways to reach the audience. However, companies such as Google, General Motors, and Adidas still paid $2 million for a commercial, despite fearing low ratings.
  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Oscars, obtains a heaping portion of its revenue from the event. This is because ABC pays $75 million annually for broadcasting rights to the Academy Awards. ABC has a contract with the Academy until 2028. It allows the Academy to stay afloat financially even if Sunday’s production did not have a good turnout. Yet, the Washington Post reported that the 2028 deadline raises the possibility of a reorganization. Some options include moving the Oscars to another network or completely remaking the prestigious awards show.

Additionally, the Academy Awards have seen a steady decline in viewers throughout the past few years. During the 2010s, viewership reduced to “barely half” of its numbers at the beginning of the decade. The 2010 production had 42 million viewers, but the 2020 one only had 24 million. This may be due to the outrage on the lack of diversity in the nominees and not having a host for three consecutive years.

Willow Smith Opens Up About Being Polyamorous

Published

on

Willow Smith opened up to her mother and grandmother on “Red Table Talk” about being comfortable with multiple intimate relationships.

What We Know:

  • Artists and musician Willow Smith is embracing a polyamorous lifestyle according to this week’s discussion on “Red Table Talk,”  a popular Facebook Watch talk show hosted by her mom Jada Pinkett Smith accompanied by grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norris. Polyamory is the pursuit of multiple emotional and romantic relationships with the informed consent of all partners involved.
  • Willow tells her family that her decision to pursue consensual nonmonogamy is rooted in her distain of marriage and the traditional roles of being a married woman. She noted that “With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do.”

“So I was like, ‘How can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind?'” she continued.

  • Gabrielle Smith, a polyamory advocate, appeared as a guest on the talk show to discuss what consensual nonmonogamy means. “It’s not about, ‘Oh, I wanna have all these partners. I wanna do all of these things,'” Gabrielle said. “It’s just like my sexuality. I’m not specifically attracted to men, and I’m not specifically attracted to women or any other gender. It’s that I am open to anything. I want to be able to take opportunities if I feel like they’re natural to me.”
  • According to a 2016 study out of Indiana University published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, over 20 percent of U.S. adult surveyed reported having at some point in their lives experienced this nontraditional romantic arrangement despite age, education level, income, religion, region, political affiliation, and race. However, straight men straight, gay men, lesbians, or bisexual people were likelier to have experienced consensual nonmonogamy.

Willow admits that although she believes in polyamory, she didn’t see herself having more than two partners at a time.

Floyd Mayweather to Fight YouTube Star Logan Paul in Miami

Published

on

The fight will occur at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida on June 6.

What We Know:

  • Five-time world champion Floyd Mayweather announced the event on Instagram this Tuesday. In his post, he mentioned Mayweather Promotions, Fanmio, and Showtime are teaming up to produce this “epic event”. Viewers at home can watch the boxing match via pay-per-view on Showtime in the United States, or Fanmio in other nations. Showtime has not provided any prices as of yet, but those watching on Fanmio can purchase the competition for $49.99. Tickets also go on sale next week.
  • Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, the fight was originally scheduled for February but had been postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 restrictions. Since then, it was billed as a “special exhibition”.
  • Mayweather told The Disruptive Entrepreneur podcast he believed a fight between him and Logan Paul meant they could “go out, entertain, have fun, and make nine figures, $100 million or more.” The Athletic mentions that “Mayweather’s eye for money led him into verbal exchanges with Paul.” The latter immediately responded and the two began discussing a potential match. After the initial February event fell through, Mayweather pulled some strings with his connection at Showtime. The company was willing to promote the show on their platform because of “the drawing power of the social-media influencer brothers in the ring,” referring to Jake and Logan Paul.
  • Mayweather’s statement did not specify how many rounds the duo will fight nor the size of gloves they will use. According to Fanmio, additional rules and the undercard will be released soon. However, TalkSport reported some undercard information has begun leaking. For example, Jean Pascal will rematch Badou Jack for WBA’s “regular” light-heavyweight belt. Jarret Hurd will also go up against Luis Arias. For the third undercard, there are rumors it may feature celebrities.
  • TheGrio wrote that some fans believe the match is a way for Mayweather and Paul to make some more money. They feel it will be similar to the fight between Mayweather and Conor McGregor.

  • Logan is a novice to the world of boxing. Initially a YouTube star, he began a professional boxing career in 2019. He has only fought once and lost to fellow YouTuber KSI in November 2019. Jake also recently broke out of YouTube and started boxing. Jake has a better reputation in the boxing world, beating figures such as Nate Robinson and Ben Askren.
  • Mayweather will come out of retirement for the second time for the June 6th match. The boxer, who has 50 wins and 0 losses, as well as 27 knockouts (KOs), last defeated McGregor by a 10th round technical knockout (TKO) in August 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather has won titles in the junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight divisions. He also defeated Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018 during an exhibition bout.

Mayweather is also coining the match as an “epic crossover event”. He is currently preparing for it at the Mayweather Boxing Club in Las Vegas. Mayweather intends on carrying it a few rounds, similarly to how he did in the McGregor fight.
